Goodbye to swipe ID card readers!

In 2018, Campus Card Services (almost!) completed a project to standardise ID card readers across the University.

We replaced 300 magnetic swipe door readers with proximity (‘prox’) ID card readers. Unfortunately, there was one restricted area that we couldn’t complete due to asbestos related issues.

Less than a year later, we are pleased to report that we have now been able to replace the last remaining three swipe door readers. Staff and students now simply have to present their ID card to the door reader to gain access (similar to ‘contactless’ technology).

There are now over 1900 prox card readers in place across the University, including Halls of Residence.

If you’ve had your ID card for a while, it will still have a magnetic stripe on the back, but it has no functionality anymore. All ID cards issued from now on do not have a magnetic stripe.
