To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we wanted to take the opportunity to share some of the stories, thoughts and experiences of our current and former IT Apprentices (as we’re incredibly proud of them!).

Apprentice: Morgan Rourke
Contract Start: July 2016
Contract End: July 2018
Apprentice Role: Desktop Technician

I enjoy working and conversing with the wide range of diverse individuals at the University of St Andrews as it has allowed me to increase my interpersonal skills. My role  is extremely enjoyable as I have always dreamed of working in either Engineering or Information Technology.

My most enjoyable moment so far was the first time I assisted a user without the help of a colleague. I would normally put a build on a computer myself and then arrange with the user a suitable time to help them with the installation of their new equipment. A colleague would normally come with me, however on this occasion I went alone. The installation went successfully and this made me feel that I had accomplished an individual goal I had set myself.

Since joining, I have gained an exceptional amount of knowledge that I never thought was possible. Initially, I had no idea what I was doing. However, through the help of my colleagues – I can now independently carry out tasks without requiring assistance. This is one of the major key aspects of my apprenticeship and therefore I would recommend an apprenticeship to young people.

The journey so far has allowed me to obtain valuable on the job experience. It has also allowed me to become a confident and independent individual. I chose an apprenticeship over university because it was more appealing as I would also be earning a weekly wage, gaining valuable experience and still undertaking a qualification.
