What is Microsoft Edge Chromium?

Early last year, Microsoft released its newest web browsing facility, which is completely compatible on both MacOS and Windows 10 machines, Microsoft Edge Chromium. Microsoft’s plans to end security support for the legacy version of Microsoft Edge took place on March 9th, 2021 meaning it is no longer be available on University machines. Microsoft Edge Chromium should already be available for you to try out via your Start menu (Windows) or alternatively, install via the Microsoft website if you are using a personal machine or Mac.

Microsoft Edge Chromium is based similarly on Google Chrome (which you may have noticed) as it is part of the Chromium open-source project which focuses on building a safer, faster and more stable way for all Internet users to experience the web. The new browser offers some features Chrome doesn’t. For example, Edge Chromium has a built-in tracking prevention feature and a potentially unwanted program (PUP) blocker.

Although it bases itself on Google Chrome in many ways, it also keeps a few features from the old Edge’s interface. There’s a favourites button to the right of the address bar on Edge’s browser toolbar and Microsoft is also porting other features from the old Edge over, including ‘collections’ for capturing screenshots of web pages and storing them all in one place.

As already mentioned, the new browser is supported on Windows 10 and MacOS, as well as additional operating systems such as Windows 8.1, iOS and Android. Microsoft will also be releasing a version for Linux in the future.
