Scottish Apprenticeship Week: meet our IT apprentices
To celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we asked our current IT apprentices to share their experience since starting at the University. Find out what Cammy, Jack, Reece, and Cammy had to say.
Cammy, IT Security Apprentice
As an IT Security Apprentice, Cammy works alongside the IT Security team to assist with safeguarding the University by monitoring and defending against cyber threats.
“I saw this apprenticeship as a valuable opportunity to learn new skills, gain experience and receive a qualification through QA.”
Cammy has had the opportunity to work on the IT Service Desk to gain exposure to frontline support. He also took part in planning the annual University events for Cyber Scotland Week 2025.
“Apply for the apprenticeship. Even if you don’t think you’ll stay in IT, the core skills you learn can be applied in any job, and the work experience from somewhere like the University is invaluable.”
Jack, Digital Workplace Apprentice
Jack works within our Business Relationship Management team. The purpose of this team is to promote IT updates to the wider University, through our blog, newsletters, and social media, as well as raising awareness of available tools through IT inductions and staff drop-in sessions.
“Before my apprenticeship, I was in and out of different colleges, struggling to find something that I enjoyed. I struggled with all the exams and coursework as I prefer hands-on learning.”
Within the team, Jack leads our social media campaigns, delivers IT inductions and helps to manage our online presence.
“I’ve been given tons of fantastic opportunities during my time here; from working with different departments and people, being able to go away and help charities with their social media and attend a work placement with 4J Studios in Dundee, a company that I’d never thought I’d be able to experience.”
“For anyone thinking about doing an apprenticeship or unsure if it’s for them, don’t be! It’s been one of the best experiences and opportunities I’ve ever been able to do and I highly recommended doing it over going to college or even uni.”
Reece, IT Service Desk Apprentice
Reece works on our IT Service Desk as the first point of contact for students and staff seeking help from IT Services.
“Before starting my IT apprenticeship, I was studying accountancy in college. While I enjoyed working with numbers and problem-solving, I realised that my real passion lay in technology.”
“I applied for this apprenticeship because I wanted hands-on experience in IT while continuing to develop my technical skills in a professional environment.”
Cammy, IT/AV Technician Apprentice
Cammy is part of our IT/AV team within IT Services. Alongside our IT/AV technicians, Cammy helps to build new staff devices, maintain our technology within our teaching spaces, and support staff to use them during classes and events.
“I was looking for anything I could use to kick-start a career within IT so when I saw an apprenticeship I thought that would be ideal.”
As part of their development activities, our IT apprentices delivered a presentation to a group of IT staff about their journey. They detailed what they had learnt and reflected on their progress and shift in confidence since their first week to now.
“I couldn’t imagine delivering a presentation to room full of people about my apprenticeship but I did – and it went great!”
“For anyone looking to apply for an IT apprenticeship, go for it!”
