Cyberattacks on UK supermarkets: insights for staff
Marks And Spencer (M&S) and Co-op were recently the victims of sophisticated cyber breaches that has resulted in the loss of customer details and impacted their operations. While this doesn’t directly affect us, it is a reminder of the devastating impact a cyberattack can have on a business.
Considering this attack, here are several basic steps you can take to protect yourself and the University.
Password best practices
Use a unique password. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple sites. If you do, if one account is compromised, all are.
Create a strong password. We recommend using a passphrase rather than a password (three unique words) with a minimum of 12 characters, at least 1 symbol and 1 number.
Three random words guidance from National Cyber Security Centre.
Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) on personal accounts. We have mandated MFA at the University, but we recommend enabling it on your personal accounts as well. MFA adds a second layer of authentication and enhanced protection.
Be vigilant against phishing attacks
Be wary of unexpected emails. Be cautious with any unexpected communications, especially those that create a sense of urgency.
Suspicious links or attachments. Avoid clicking on or opening any links or attachments from unknown or untrusted sources.
Report any suspicious emails. If you receive any suspicious emails, please report them using the ‘report phishing’ button or by forwarding the email to [email protected].
Stay up to date
Regularly update your computer. Don’t forget about your own devices, including your phone and tablets.
Follow IT news for a monthly newsletter containing IT updates.
Subscribe to the IT blog for regular updates about cybersecurity and IT projects.
Please be vigilant with any emails – cyber criminals may use the stolen information to legitimise their fraudulent emails and target you.
