Cyber Resilience and You: practical online safety for students
Staying safe online is more important than ever. From protecting your personal data to avoiding scams, understanding the basics of cybersecurity can make a big difference to your online life. That’s why the University is encouraging students to complete Cyber Resilience and You — an interactive online training designed to help students boost their cyber awareness in a practical way.
Created by students for students
Unlike other training programmes, this resource was created by students, for students. As part of the University of St Andrews Summer Teams Enterprise Programme (STEP), a group of undergraduates worked alongside professional staff from IT Services, the Centre for Educational Enhancement and Development (CEED), and the School of Computer Science.
The team set out to design something engaging and useful, drawing on the real challenges that students face online. The result is a multiple-choice game that uses everyday scenarios — from recognising phishing attempts to spotting accommodation scams — to make learning about cybersecurity both accessible and memorable.
How this training helps protect you online
Cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and students are often targeted. Completing Cyber Resilience and You will help you:
- Recognise common scams and avoid falling victim to them.
- Protect your accounts and devices with stronger passwords and safer habits.
- Feel more confident online, knowing how to spot risks and what to do.
- Build lifelong digital skills that will benefit you well beyond university.
Backed by national cyber security experts
The training was developed in collaboration with stakeholders including the Scottish Government and the National Cyber Security Centre. It was officially launched during Cyber Scotland Week at Abertay cyberQuarter and is now being rolled out to students across Scotland’s Higher and Further Education institutions.Â
