To help keep University systems and data secure, IT Services is introducing SentinelOne, a new antivirus application for University-supplied Windows and macOS staff devices.

How SentinelOne works

SentinelOne runs quietly in the background, protecting your staff device from malware, viruses, and other cyber threats. If harmful files or suspicious activity are detected, the software will automatically take action, running security scans and quarantining dangerous files. For most staff, there is nothing you need to do. The software works automatically and, where supported, web browser extensions will be installed for you.

If SentinelOne detects an issue that requires your attention, IT Services will contact you directly.  As always, we encourage you to get in touch with the IT Service Desk if you see any warnings or alerts relating to malware or viruses on your device so that we can investigate these.

Personal and Student Devices

The University no longer provides an antivirus product for personal devices, including student devices.

Built-in security tools in Windows and macOS now provide excellent protection for most users. However, if you would prefer to use a third-party antivirus product, popular free options include:

Existing WithSecure Users

If you currently use WithSecure through a University licence, your licence will remain valid until February 2027. There is no immediate need to remove it, but we recommend uninstalling the software at a time that is convenient for you.

Thank you for helping to keep the University safe and secure.
