During July, we welcome new staff, carry out technology checks, updates and upgrades and resolved 4130 support queries.
1. IT Services welcomes three new IT apprentices

We are delighted to welcome three new apprentices to the IT Services team as part of our award-winning Apprenticeship Programme.
Jack Harrison and Jay Given are joining our IT/AV Technician team, while Elliot Berghuis is joining our IT Service Desk team. Over the next 2 years the trio will gain a wealth of experience through hands on experience and shadowing work with our teams, studying for their Diploma in IT support through our apprenticeship partner, Elite and receive support and mentorship throughout. This ensures they maximise their employability opportunities by the end of their apprenticeship with us.
IT Services has been proud to welcome over 40 modern apprentices since 2012.

2. Kris Getchell appointed Depute CIO of IT Services
Dr Kris Getchell has been appointed Depute Chief Information Officer for IT Services, having successfully held the interim role since November 2025.
A graduate of the University, Kris brings a wealth of experience in digital leadership and transformation, having previously served as Chief Information Officer at Fife College and Head of ICT Services at Dundee & Angus College. Throughout his career, he has led major technology and service improvement initiatives, helping organisations harness digital innovation to better support their staff and students.
3. Tech Upgrades in Teaching Spaces
During the summer months, IT Services teams take the opportunity to check, update and upgrade hardware across teaching and study spaces.
Recent theatre upgrades include Gateway Lecture Rooms 3/4, School V, and Bute Lecture Theatres A and D.
4. Computer Upgrades in the Main Library
We are continually monitoring the performance of pcs in our computer classroom and study space estate, and during July our team have replaced 160 pcs in the Main Library.
These upgrades ensure that students and staff have access to reliable, quality computers, which are protected by the latest software and security updates.
This work is part of the larger project, where over 1200 pcs have been updated with the latest version of applications, ahead of the start of the new academic year.

5. Behind the Scenes at Agilico: Our IT apprentice’s perspectives
In May, three of our IT Apprentices visited Agilico, the University’s Managed Print Service provider. The visit provided an opportunity to learn about the company’s sustainability initiatives, about the important of circular IT and reuse, and how it works to make its products as environmentally responsible as possible. The team also received practical guidance on using these products more effectively to support sustainable working practices across the University.
