August was another busy  month for IT Services,  as we celebrated network service anniversaries and colleagues’ long service, all while the team resolved 4,403 support queries.

1. Start of term  preparations

A busy university information fair taking place in a grand hall with high coffered ceilings, large hanging lights, tall curtained windows, and framed portraits on the walls. Dozens of attendees stand around information tables and subject displays, including banners for University of St Andrews schools and academic departments, while reading materials and speaking with representatives.

The start of a new academic year is always a busy and exciting time for IT Services.  Every area of IT Services plays a key role in these preparations, with teams across the service working behind the scenes to ensure systems, support, and resources are ready to welcome students back. This involves months of planning, preparation, and collaboration across our teams.

A big thank you and well done goes out to every member of the IT Services team whose hard work and care have contributed to a successful start of term for our students.

2. 30 Years of network connectivity in Student Residences

A large historic stone building is viewed across a landscaped lawn with mature trees in bloom. Several people are sitting on the grass near flowerbeds, while others walk along the lawn. The scene is brightly lit by sunshine, with tree branches partially framing and shading the building façade.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of ResNet, the service that first brought network connectivity to student residences. Launched as a pilot in 1996, the scheme initially connected a small number of rooms across four halls of residence, giving students access to a then cutting-edge 10Mb network connection directly from their bedrooms. Student Residence Computing Co-ordinators (RCCs) played a vital role in supporting users and helping the service grow across campus.

Over the past three decades, ResNet has evolved from wired Ethernet sockets to a fully automated wireless service. Today, more than 4,200 authorised users can connect up to two devices each, with support for everything from Smart TV’s to games consoles and e-readers. Available in 95% of student residences, Wireless ResNet now uses WiFi 7 technology, providing students with fast, secure and reliable connectivity.

From a handful of network points in residence halls to thousands of connected devices, ResNet’s 30-year journey reflects the University’s continued commitment to enhancing the student experience and ensuring residents stay connected wherever they live.

3. Kevin Thomson celebrates 25 years of service

A meeting or training room with tables arranged around the perimeter and a large screen displaying an online meeting interface. One person stands at a central table cutting a cake, while another person photographs the moment using a mobile phone. Several attendees are seated around the room watching the celebration.

To celebrate, the IT Services team gathered in WBH (and online) to honour Kevin’s work and achievements during his quarter-century stint.
