We’re upgrading the University telephone system from the 6th to the 14th January 2020. The upgrade will affect all University phone lines (3800+ extensions and is necessary to allow for future developments of our telephony infrastructure.

We are working with local staff to minimise disruption and anticipate that the loss of service for each individual extension will be no more than one hour.

In the majority of cases, the contractor will carry out all of the upgrades after 5.30pm. Buildings which have significant evening activity, where possible, we shall carry out the upgrade at a mutually convenient time.

Key points

• The main University switchboard number will be upgraded on the evening of 07/01/20 and will continue to divert to 8999 (Security & Response extension), therefore this service is not affected;
• The Security and Response extension (8999) will be affected on the evening of 13/01/20 and we will advertise an alternative extension for this period;
• Eight University lifts will be affected by a loss of service as they are connected to the telephone exchange. Guidance will be issued that those lifts must not be used during this time.  Local staff will be asked to ensure reasonable steps are taken to prevent staff or students from using the eight lifts throughout the period of outage;
• When individual extensions are being migrated, credit card payments cannot be taken during the period of the outage;
• Call forwarding from a University extension (to a mobile or voicemail) will not be available during the period of the outage;
• Telephones in Halls of Residence will be affected.  To minimise the impact of accessing Wardennial services in the Halls, upgrades will be carried out during the day.   Other lines in Halls will be upgraded in the evening (with the exception of DRA/FP, which will be carried out during the day).
• Intruder or fire alarm signalling will not be affected;
• CL3 labs must not be used during the period of the outage;
• Access Control will not be affected;
• Skype for Business will be affected on the evening of 07/01/20, but only the telephony element.  Instant Message, presence, etc. will not be affected.
