Former St Andrews Modern and Graduate apprentice wins Best New Cyber Talent award at glitzy Scottish Cyber Awards 2022 on Thursday 24 November.

The Scottish Cyber Awards are now in their sixth year, and hosted annually by Scottish comedian and radio presenter, Fred MacAulay. Over 350 cyber security and IT professionals from around Scotland attended the ceremony at Edinburgh’s Sheraton Hotel.

Greg was nominated for the award by his fellow colleagues, who felt he deserved industry recognition for his enthusiasm, dedication, and hard work in carrying out his day-to-day tasks, along with his own personal development in IT and cyber. They feel that Greg has a ‘continual service improvement’ attitude, which really motivates other colleagues.

Greg Jennings, a former pupil of Monifieth High School, Dundee, joined the IT Services at the University of St Andrews as Modern Apprentice in 2015. In 2017 he secured a full time IT Service Desk Analyst role with the team. Keen to develop and learn further, Greg chose to study for his BSc (Hons) in IT Management for Business at the University of Dundee, via their graduate apprenticeship route in 2018.

When an opportunity to join the University’s Cyber Security team became available in August 2020, Greg jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back. Since securing this role Greg has transferred his previously attained skills as an IT Service Desk member, while developing new ones, to provide increased capability in cyber incident response and guidance to users, with an excellent balance. Pleasant and personable, he is capable of working at a technical level whilst explaining things simply and clearly to users helping them understand the important aspects of cyber security in a way which is tailored to them.  Greg graduated with his honours degree (2:1) last November.

“When I found out I was shortlisted for this award, I was overwhelmed that my colleagues felt so strongly that I was worthy candidate! I certainly didn’t expect to win and I was so happy to receive this incredible accolade; not just for myself, but for everyone in IT Services at the University of St Andrews. My colleagues and managers have been so supportive of my development since I started here, and we are a great team.”

Greg Jennings, IT Security Analyst

“Huge congratulations to Greg – he really deserves this. Greg is a fantastic role model and plays a key role in the development of our cyber security function at the University of St Andrews.”
