Finding the messages that matter

Tip 1. Encourage your colleagues to use @mentions

Once you get into the habit of using @mentions (@user , @team, or @channel depending on who the post is relevant to):

  • the people you want to get ahold of will respond faster
  • the @mentioned group can sift back on these important messages later with ease (next tip)
  • other colleagues can work without interruption

Tip 2. Filter your Activity Feed

Your Activity Feed is great to quickly navigate to a relevant post. If you’ve been away for a while, and your activity feed is sitting at 10, 20 or more notifications, use the filter skip to the Team or user you want to check.

Tip 3. Show, hide, or pin a channel

In Teams, teamwork and communication happen in channels. A channel is a single place for a team to share messages, tools, and files. Show, hide, and pin channels to focus your workspace.

Tip 4. Mute or set notifications for posts and channels

There might be a big project which you contributed to…and are now still in the team, receiving lots of notifications. If you still need visibility over what’s happening but without the disruption, mute the channel for now. You can unmute it later.

Similarly, there may be one thread within a team that you’d like to follow, but don’t want to receive notifications for every post.

Read the Microsoft guide ‘Customize channel notifications in Microsoft Teams.’
