Wireless ResNet: a new wifi service for Halls of Residence
Next month, we’ll launch wireless ResNet, a new wifi service for students staying in Halls. The network is designed specifically for your recreational devices.
What devices can connect to wireless ResNet
In the past, if you brought a gaming console, we couldn’t guarantee that it would connect to our educational network, eduroam. Using wireless ResNet, students can now connect:
- Gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch)
- Smart TVs
- Smart speakers (Amazon Alexa, Google Home)
- E-readers
The only wifi-enabled devices which are not allowed on wireless ResNet are smart home appliances. For example, smart plugs or lighting.
How does it work
The wifi will operate in a similar way to your home broadband. You’ll receive a unique wifi password when you register your devices.
- Visit connect.st-andrews.ac.uk/ipsk and enter your username and password.
- Register your device using its Media Access Control (MAC) address. Look up ‘[device name] MAC address’ online if you’re not sure how to find it. It will be 12 digits in the following format: 00:00:00:00:00:00.
- Get your unique wifi password.
- Connect to ResNet wifi.
To ensure everyone gets a smooth experience, you can connect up to two devices at a time. You can register more, but you’ll need to disconnect one to add another.
Ethernet cables will no longer be issued. The new wireless ResNet uses the existing ethernet ports, so everything is now wireless and hassle-free.
When to use ResNet vs. eduroam
Keep using eduroam for your phone, tablet, and laptop.
Connect devices to ResNet that:
- don’t support browser-based login
- will stay in your room
